Chelmsford, MA

The McCarthy family loved their neighborhood and liked their 1970 colonial house, but the layout didn’t support the way they wanted to live. They envisioned a comfortable place where they could gather on a day-to-day basis and on special occasions. The existing living room and dining room were rarely used and the family room was isolated from the small, dark, kitchen.

The new great room is grand and light filled. It is immediately off the renovated kitchen and connects the house to the backyard. It includes a large stone fireplace and mantle, flanked by oversized windows on either side that frame the view of a pool and a magnificent maple tree. It has become the new heart of the McCarthy home.

Included in the renovation was a master suite above the existing garage with a private staircase and screened in porch, ideal for dinner on a warm summer night.

The new additions thoughtfully respond to the character of the existing house while refreshing the overall composition.
